Ever wondered why it takes a lot to sit tight in one place for work while staring at your mobile screen for ‘who knows how much time’ is quite a fun ride? Fascinating!
Let me help you break it down into pieces. If you know where to start from, it’s already halfway to be focused in life.
But to learn more, you need to put aside all distractions and commit to this article with all your efforts. You are 10 minutes away from finding out how to be focused and concentrated in all aspects of your life.
Focus and Concentration
Here is what many of us always mix up. Focus and concentration may be the passengers of one specific flight, but these are not the same.
Focus is how we drive ourselves to work on a specific activity while filtering out distractions. On the other hand, concentration is the consistency of being focused on a task for a long time. These are actually linear steps, one after another. Focus eventually leads to concentration if we cherish it.
Both work together when we align them in a way. For example, you are sitting in front of your computer, ready to dive in. Your commitment to that is your focus. While you’re doing that, all the distractions will come after you. Notifications, calls, messages, and sudden meetings will be there. Concentration will help you out by filtering them to keep you on track. It’s like the Superman of your productive life.
8 steps to be focused in life
1. Comfortable Workplace
I remember having a job in a call centre. Twenty-three of us used to share one single room. During our office time, we had to talk to hundreds of customers, and guess what? We were stressed out! We were all out of focus and restless. I figured it out, went for an interview, and switched my job to a marketing agency, where I felt like working all day long. I was more focused and productive than ever before.
So, the environment matters, not only in the office but also at home. Make it calm and peaceful, and see the magic!
2. Spiritual connectivity
Now that’s a task I strongly recommend everyone maintain at any cost. This world is full of restless souls. And if you ask me the reason, I will definitely bring this point to the front. We are not connected to our creator. Many may find it difficult to relate to, but it is what it is! Human beings are actually made to stay relaxed. They are not made to predict future states or count the past. So, we must rest our cases with the Almighty and keep our hands on the move.
Those who are religious and count on their creator are more focused, positive, and productive. It also relates to meditation and mindfulness. The tasks are to pray daily, say “All is well,” and work with concentration.
3. Avoid multitasking and distractions
As I mentioned earlier, keep the distractions away. Especially the tiny little rectangular-shaped mobile out of sight, you know why!
I know most of you love to do multiple tasks at a time and take the credit. But I must remind you that it brings faulty tasks, stress, and might kill your creativity. It’s better to make a priority-based to-do list and follow it one after another. I personally found it effective, not to mention recommended by many experts.
4. Take breaks
Remember the Pomodoro Technique? Only a very few know about it, I’m afraid. This technique says we need to take breaks for 5 minutes after every 25 minutes of focused work. It increases our concentration and leads us to practical work. I myself am a beneficiary of this technique. I used to write for a long time, a year ago, and ended up with unfinished projects and stressed. It took me a long time to reach the mountain of workload earlier. Now, I work in periods, and life is so good.
So, do you want to be boosted? Try to maintain a period after a particular time by doing a fun activity. Yeah, it works! Want to be focused, right?
5. Get yourself a proper sleep
While we’re desperate to achieve a powerful focus, we often forget the necessity of adequate sleep. For adults, 7 to 8 hours of sleep is recommended to enhance cognitive status and focus.
I know most of us are dealing with the sleep variations. We need to take a few precautions to prevent that from happening. Yes, that device in your hand is causing considerable damage to your smooth lifestyle. Put it aside at least 1 hour before you plan to go to sleep. Maintaining it for at least 30 days will help you start to see the green light in your lifestyle.
Wait, do you exercise before going to sleep? Drop that! It excites our nerves and causes sleep deprivation. Taking caffeine is also a bad idea at night unless you’re a night owl who writes like me! In short, go to bed early, and avoid all kinds of machines along with caffeine. You’ll be focused and productive in the morning after a proper sleep. I promise!
6. Add exercise to your daily lifestyle
I used to skip that part a lot earlier. Believe me! A writer is always a couch potato! However, a writer is also the person who needs the most powerful focus. I finally managed to get myself to hit the gym anyway. And the result was excellent! I won’t mention my muscles, but my brain immediately recharged. I was hitting the bullseye every day like I’m a new me with the same skin.
No matter which industry you belong to, exercise does work! Hit the gym for 30 minutes a day and recharge. Plus, you might get your muscles buffed!
7. Maintain healthy food habits
We all might’ve heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” True that! Not only does it keep a doctor away, but it also makes you fit for the fight.
You can never have a workable brain if your food doesn’t contain nutrition. We are more into processed food these days. But in order to live a controlled life, we need to consume foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, vitamin B, and antioxidants.
These restore our brain health and primarily develop our concentration. Antioxidants improve our focus.
So, what are you up to? Go for the apple!
8. Change the air and travel around
Going on a trip is no longer considered recreation. It’s a necessity! Like having good food, proper rest, comfortable shelter, and a friendly environment. Who doesn’t need that? But in South Asian countries, we walk with a cluttered brain while saving money by cancelling trips for next year.
We don’t feel the urge to go for it. If you want a peaceful, ready-to-work brain, you must go near the green. Nature has its own aura to recharge your brain cells.
Take a day out or two, go to the mountain or ocean, hike a bit, swim to the fullest, run like a baby, and take deep breaths. I can feel the energy thinking of it. Go for it. Hurry!
Conclusion
Let’s be real, staying focused in today’s world is no joke. There’s always something buzzing, ringing, or popping up on our screens. But hey, if you’ve made it to the end of this post, that already says something big: you’re serious about figuring out how to be focused.
And guess what? You don’t need to be a productivity guru to get there. You just need to start small. Maybe it’s turning off your notifications while working, or maybe it’s finally getting that 7-hour sleep your body’s been begging for. It could even be as simple as taking a walk outside to clear your mind.
The truth is, how to be focused isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present. It’s about showing up for yourself every single day: messy, tired, distracted—but still trying. And over time, with these little changes, you’ll notice a shift. Your mind will feel clearer, your energy will last longer, and your goals? They’ll start to feel a lot closer than before.
So here’s a gentle nudge: Don’t wait for the “perfect” time to start. Just take the first step today. You already know how to be focused; now it’s time to live it.
You’ve got this.
